ANIMAL ARK APPEAL

Carlton Television Presenter Alison Johns launched the Animal Ark Appeal for the North Devon Branch of the RSPCA in April 2002. She said, "I have a dog and five cats, so I know how much love pets can give and how much they need in return. That is why I am delighted to launch the Animal Ark Appeal in North Devon."

The Branch currently has no facilities of its own and relies heavily on commercial catteries and volunteers to care for the animals it takes in. These services are fragmented and difficult to manage and support, especially as the Branch is mostly run by volunteers.

The need for extra facilities has arisen mainly because of the increased numbers of animals rescued by the Animal Ambulance. Often the animals picked up are sick, and as well as needing veterinary treatment, they also need special care facilities whilst they recuperate.

At present we do not have the right sort of accommodation available. Because a lot of our animal care is done by volunteers in their private homes, it is not visible to the general public, and we would like everyone to be able to see exactly what we do and what is needed.

The other reason the Branch needs to extend its services is the escalating use of the Disney Clinic in Barnstaple. The Clinic has recently increased its veterinary sessions to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

We need larger premises where we can offer more extensive treatment.

Ideally the Branch needs a Re-Homing Rescue Centre of its own, but that is still a dream that we always hope will come true.

We aim to raise £250,000 to provide a more easily accessible and efficient service and to make stage one of that dream come true.

If the Appeal does not raise sufficient funds to finance that dream, or if there is any surplus, it will be applied by the Branch in providing accommodation for animals in need.

Our aim is to make a variety of services more readily available and to promote responsible pet ownership.
